Isometrics are a type of stretching exercise which forces a contraction on a stretched muscle. For instance, leaning against a wall with your hands and trying to push the wall out with those same arms is a form of isometric exercise. The muscles are already stretched by extending them to the wall, and they are contracted and further stretched by forcing the push through the wall.
Understanding the concept of isometrics will make it clearer as to why so many trainers and body builders consider it one of the best stretching exercises you can do for your body. The isometric stretch will not only build up muscle, but it will also help limber the muscle and make it more flexible. It is also a type of exercise that can be done anywhere at any time as long as you have something of resistance to push against. Although it is considered by many to be the stretching exercise of choice, it is also considered advanced, and injury can occur if it is not done properly. Additionally, isometrics are not recommended for kids or teens. But for a person in fairly good shape, isometrics can definitely assist in the strengthening and limbering up of muscles.
Isometric stretches are generally followed by periods of rest to allow the stretched muscle to relax. It is not recommended that you continually do the same flex without giving the muscle a chance to rest. It is an exercise type that you might consider in your workout routine.
